The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) was created to provide a single point of accountability for enforcing federal consumer financial laws and protecting consumers in the financial marketplace. The CFPB mission is to root out unfair, deceptive, or abusive acts or practices by writing rules, supervising companies, and enforcing the law; enforce laws that outlaw discrimination in consumer finance; accept consumer complaints; offer financial education; research the consumer experience of using financial products; and monitor financial markets for new risks to consumers.
Dataset: Count of Complaints from the Consumer Complaint Database Database
Reports counts of complaints submitted to the CFPB by state, month of submission, the company the complaint was sent to for response, and the product at issue, as well as information about the actions taken by the company in response to the complaint, such as, whether the company’s response was timely and how the company responded. Company level information should be considered in context of company size and/or market share. Complaints referred to other regulators, such as complaints about depository institutions with less than $10 billion in assets, are not published in the Consumer Complaint Database. Consumers provide consent to publication of the information; any personal information submitted is not published.
The Consumer Complaint Database is a collection of complaints on a range of consumer financial products and services, sent to companies for response. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau does not verify all the facts alleged in these complaints, but does take steps to confirm a commercial relationship between the consumer and the company. Since complaints were accepted beginning in July 2011, the CFPB’s goal has been to help consumers connect with financial companies to understand issues with their mortgages, fix errors on their credit reports, stop harassment from debt collectors, and get direct responses about problems with their credit cards, checking and savings accounts, student loans, and more. The CFPB also analyzes the data to identify trends and problems in the marketplace, help supervise companies and enforce federal consumer financial laws, and inform the writing of rules and regulations. Reports on complaints are issued and shared with state and federal agencies.
